In short

The Gared 1100 Safstop is a backstop safety lock that mounts to the gymnasium ceiling superstructure and acts as a seat belt for a folding basketball backstop. If a cable, pulley, support fitting or winch fails, any sudden surge of speed locks the nylon belt and holds the backstop in position. It is rated to capture a 1000 lb (454 kg) free falling load and is recommended for any backstop folded over seating.

The Safstop is designed to prevent free-fall of backstops caused by cable, pulley, support fitting or winch failure. Any sudden surge of speed quickly locks the unit and holds the backstop in any position, and it does so before the belt travels 3" (76 mm) in a free-fall. The unit is rated to capture a 1000 lb (454 kg) free falling load and has been tested to capture a 1750 lb (794 kg) free falling load without structural or belt failure. Gared cautions that this rating does not ensure that other components, such as the building structure, will withstand that load.

The Safstop attaches to 3 1/2" (89 mm) or 4" (102 mm) O.D. overhead superstructure with a universal mounting bracket that allows the tubing to run either parallel or perpendicular to the unit. The 2" (51 mm) wide nylon belt has a tensile strength of 6000 lbs (2722 kg) and can extend 35 feet (10.7 m); it is attached to the backstop frame with a buckle connection. A yellow warning indicator is exposed if the Safstop has been engaged, so staff can see at a glance that the unit needs attention.

The locking mechanism sits inside a cast aluminum housing and works by inertial force for immediate and positive setting, or by centrifugal force for slower setting. The Safstop has an automatic spring-loaded reset and needs no electricity to operate, and it is fully functional during storage, raising and lowering of backstops. For taller backstops, model 1100-45 offers the same specifications with a strap that extends 45 ft (13.7 m).

Warranty

5-Year Limited Warranty on the Model 1100 safety strap

Gared Holdings LLC warrants its equipment against defects in material or factory workmanship. Coverage length depends on the product line — this model carries the warranty noted above where listed. Gared's warranty periods run as follows:

Lifetime - Endurance playground systems: in-ground post, extension arm and bracing components.
25 years - Standard Duty and Heavy Duty playground posts (braced gooseneck and adjustable straight post structures).
10 years - volleyball uprights on OmniSteel, OmniLite, RallyLine and GoCourt systems, and economy playground posts.
5 years - FGP series football goalposts, manual and electric winches, curtain hoists and the SafStop gymnasium structure.
4 years - 2500 / 2500I Tournament breakaway goals.
3 years - winch assemblies, floor sleeves and cover plates, and regulation volleyball nets.
2 years - portable winch winders and selected backboards.
1 year - nets, padding, base adapters, height adjusters, badminton and tetherball systems, referee stands and accessories.

The warranty period starts on the date of substantial completion (installation). Defects must be reported to Gared in writing during the warranty period with proof of purchase and the purchase or installation date; Gared will repair or replace the defective equipment at its discretion, with shipping, insurance and installation costs borne by the owner.

Not covered: improper installation, use other than intended, unauthorized alterations or modifications, abuse or misuse, and damage from fire, flood, wind or lightning. Liability is limited to repair or replacement of the defective equipment. As an authorized Gared dealer, JoySportStore files warranty claims directly with the manufacturer on your behalf.
