Basketball Equipment

How to Choose Basketball Equipment: Start With the Mount

Your biggest decision is how the hoop attaches. That choice sets the backboard size, how far the rim adjusts and how much installation work you take on. In-ground systems sit in a concrete footing and suit driveways and backyard courts. Wall-mount goals bolt to a structural wall and save floor space in gyms and garages. Ceiling-hung backstops fold up out of the way in school and rec gyms. Portable systems roll on wheels across multi-use floors. Browse all basketball hoops, or go straight to in-ground basketball hoops or wall mount and ceiling systems.

Here is how several systems in this collection compare, based on manufacturer specs:

Backboards, Rims and Nets: Materials That Matter

Tempered glass backboards, found on Dominator, Gared, Jaypro and the Douglas D-Pro 645 MAX, give the truest bounce. They are the usual pick for gyms and serious home courts. Acrylic (Gared Micro-Z) and polycarbonate (Douglas D-Pro 435 MAX) are lighter and handle impact better, so they work well for recreational play.

A breakaway rim flexes under a dunk and springs back, which protects both the backboard and the player. The Gared 8800 Endurance uses a double spring flex design and meets NCAA and high school requirements. A stationary rim such as the Gared 39WO suits playgrounds and casual play. For nets, you can choose nylon or welded steel chain. The First Team FT10 nylon net is UV resistant and works indoors or outdoors. The Gared WCN chain net won't stretch, tangle or shrink during heavy play.

Measuring Your Space and Planning Installation

• Overhang: this is the distance from the backboard to the pole. More overhang means more safe space under the rim and less chance of running into the pole.
• Footing: in-ground posts need concrete. For example, the Gared GN35 gooseneck post calls for a footing of at least 24" diameter x 48" deep, with the post set at least 36" into it. Always follow the manual for your model.
• Wall offset: for wall mounts, check the face of bank and your wall construction. Jaypro stationary backstops come in versions for 8 ft. to 10 ft. and 10 ft. - 12 ft. wall offsets. Your installer supplies the wall anchors.
• Playing height: adjustable systems let young players start on a lower rim and move up to 10' as they grow. See how to measure basketball hoop height by age.

Basketball Equipment Parts and Court Accessories

Often you only need one missing piece. This collection covers:

• Padding: Jaypro Safe-Pro edge padding for 72 in. wide backboards in many team colors, Gared PRO-MOLD padding, and post pads sized to your pole. These include Gared wrap-around pads for 6-5/8″ – 8″ posts and Jaypro Titan replacement pads for 5 in. x 5 in. and 6 in. x 6 in. posts.
• Bases and anchors: Ironclad bolt-down anchor kits with a 9"x9" pattern and Jaypro surface mount anchor kits for Titan systems.
• Height adjusters: the Jaypro HAHC manual hand crank and the First Team PH05/06-CRK crank actuator.
• Replacement backboards and rims: Dominator glass replacement backboards in 60" and 72" (these fit adjustable Dominator hoops only), Ironclad backboard frames and flex rims, and Gared goals.
• Training and gym gear: the First Team FT23 Block-Aid rim rebounder, basketball ball racks, All Ball Pro multi-sport rebounders, and the Dominator ALTA Light, which puts out 6,300 lumens over a 20' x 20' area for late games.

Care and Maintenance

• Check bolts, anchor nuts and rim hardware several times a season and retighten them to spec. The Gared 39WO, for example, calls for 15 to 20 ft-lbs on its mounting nuts.
• Clean glass and acrylic backboards with a soft cloth and a non-abrasive cleaner.
• Keep height adjusters clean, and never adjust the rim while anyone is hanging on it.
• Replace torn padding and worn nets promptly.
• Touch up chips in the powder coat on outdoor steel so rust can't spread.

Brands We Carry

Jaypro makes gym shooting stations, padding and anchor kits. First Team offers WallMonster and SuperMount wall-mount goals, Storm Arena portables and nets. Gared covers in-ground, ceiling-hung and portable systems, plus rims and nets. Douglas makes the D-Pro systems, Ironclad makes backboard frames, rims and anchors, and Dominator makes aluminum in-ground hoops and replacement backboards. Some models list a USA origin, including the Jaypro WMWH and the First Team FT10 net.

Shipping and Returns

• Most orders need 1–2 business days of handling. After that, standard delivery typically takes 1–5 business days. Oversized or custom-crated items can take significantly longer, and all dates are estimates.
• Large hoops ship by freight. The Jaypro WMWH, for example, ships via LTL freight truck at 440 lbs. Freight deliveries are tailgate only, so you unload the truck yourself. Plan for a forklift, a loading dock or enough helpers, and make sure a 53’ trailer can reach your address.
• Inspect the shipment while the driver is still there. Write "DAMAGED" on the Bill of Lading if you see damage, and report any concealed damage within 24 hours.
• Oversized items may need a separate shipping quote. You can accept it, or cancel for a full refund before the item ships.
• We accept returns within 60 days of delivery for unused items in their original packaging, with an RA number from info@joysportstore.com. You pay shipping both ways, the original shipping cost is deducted, and a restocking fee applies.
