School Gym Basketball Hoops: Ceiling-Suspended, Wall-Mount and Portable Goals Compared (First Team vs Gared vs Jaypro)

For a school gym, the hoop type follows the building. Ceiling-suspended backstops such as the Gared 2207 ($1,195) suit gyms with 18' to 24' ceilings that need the walls and floor kept clear, wall-mounted units from First Team, Gared and Jaypro are the practical choice for most side courts and shooting stations, and portable competition goals handle main courts that must be cleared for other events. The JoySport Store 2026 catalog runs from $1,080.32 for Gared backstop components to $30,500 for the Gared Pro Arena 9718S, so budget and mounting surface will narrow the field quickly.

Three ways to mount a school basketball hoop

Every school basketball hoop in our catalog falls into one of three families, and each solves a different problem.

Ceiling-suspended backstops hang from the roof structure and fold up out of the way. They keep walls and floor clear, but they need a drive (an electric hoist or manual winch) and a safety lock.

Wall mounted basketball hoops bolt to a masonry or structural wall. They come as fold-up or side-fold units that swing clear, stationary packages that stay put, and adjustable shooting stations with a height crank for younger players.

Portable competition goals roll on wheels, carry their own ballast and need no structural attachment, which is why they dominate main courts shared with assemblies, volleyball and graduation.

Ceiling mounted basketball hoop: the Gared 2207 backstop

The active ceiling-hung structure on our cards is the Gared 2207 Dual Post Front-Braced Front-Folding Ceiling Hung Basketball Backstop ($1,195). It is built for 18' to 24' ceiling heights, with variants 2207-18 through 2207-23 matched to the ceiling you have. The superstructure is 3.5 in. O.D. tube with a 2.38 in. welded frame and a 1.90 in. front brace on an adjustable jacknife brace hinge. The unit hangs on a 7/8 in. drop-forged eyebolt and a 1/4 in. galvanized aircraft hoist cable with 7000 lbs breaking strength.

Backboard drop is 63 in. for a rectangular board or 35 in. for a fan-shaped board. The 2207 card does not include a backboard, goal or winch, so plan those as separate line items. Rear-fold and side-fold ceiling-hung models are not currently active in our catalog.

Drives and safety locks for folding backstops

A folding backstop needs something to raise it and something to catch it if the drive fails. The Gared 1194 Electric Hoist with Key Switch ($2,077.55) uses a minimum 3/4 HP motor rated for 1250 lbs continuous lift for 15 minutes. It moves rope at 9.5 FPM over 55' of total travel, runs on 110/115/120 VAC single-phase power through a 200:1 worm gearbox, and has upper and lower limit switches. Cable is not supplied. The Gared 1123 Manual Winch ($1,080.32) is rated 1000 lbs with a 3/4 in. square drive for gyms that prefer a hand-cranked drive.

The Gared 1100 Safstop safety lock ($1,080.32) is the component no school should skip. Its 2 in. nylon belt has 6000 lbs tensile strength, it is rated to capture a 1000 lb free-falling load, it was tested to 1750 lb, and it locks before the belt travels 3 in. It fits 3 1/2 in. or 4 in. O.D. superstructure and has a 35 ft maximum belt length.

Ceiling-hung component Role Key dimension or rating Price
Gared 2207 backstop Front-folding structure, 18' to 24' ceilings 3.5 in. O.D. superstructure; 63 in. (rectangular) or 35 in. (fan) backboard drop $1,195
Gared 1194 Electric Hoist Powered drive 1250 lbs lift for 15 minutes; 9.5 FPM; 55' travel $2,077.55

Wall mounted basketball hoop options for side courts and shooting stations

Fold-up and side-fold wall mounts

First Team FoldaMount units swing left or right on a diagonal telescoping strut that locks at any position. The structure is 2 in. square telescoping tubing on three 2 in. x 8 in. Dense Southern Yellow Pine wallboards, secured with an 800#, 3/16 in. proof chain and turnbuckle. The FoldaMount46 Rebound ($3,770) extends 48-72 in. with a 39 in. x 54 in. fan-shaped fiberglass board. The FoldaMount 68 Aggressor ($4,100) extends 72-96 in. with an approximately 42 in. x 60 in. 10 gauge steel board. The FoldaMount82 Triumph ($5,101) extends 96-144 in. with a 1/2 in. tempered glass board that meets NCAA and NFHS standards per the card, backed by a Lifetime Limited Warranty on the system and a Lifetime Superior Warranty on the backboard.

Gared's four-point telescopic packages come in both fold directions. The Corner Mount Fold-Up with Glass Board 4-6 ft. P2400-4064GL ($4,002.45) and the Corner Mount Side-Fold with Glass Board 4-6 ft. P2500-4064GL ($3,813.65) both ship with the AFRG42 glass backboard, a 2000+ breakaway rim and PMCE bolt-on padding.

Stationary wall mounts

Where the hoop never needs to move, a stationary package costs less. The Gared Direct Mount Stationary Wall Mount Package with Glass Board, 2-3 ft. P2350-2034GL ($3,247.27) is a three-point telescopic mount with 3 in. O.D. wall structure tubing, the AFRG42 glass board and PMCE padding, with the rim at 10' above finished floor.

Jaypro's N24GB ($2,911) covers 2 ft. to 4 ft. face of bank and the N1012GB ($5,015) covers 10 ft. to 12 ft. Both carry the GBRUB-42 42 in. x 72 in. glass backboard and GBA-642 Revolution breakaway goal. They require brick, concrete or other solid or semi-solid masonry and a 45 degree minimum chain angle. Jaypro also states required wall height: 16'-5" at 4' FOB for the N24GB, and 19'-5" at 10' FOB or 21'-5" at 12' FOB for the N1012GB. For a budget shooting station, the Jaypro N2FB ($2,086) is a 3-point stationary unit with a 36 in. cast aluminum fan backboard, rim at 10'-0" and a 25 Year Limited Warranty on structure.

Adjustable wall mounts for mixed-age programs

Elementary and middle school gyms often need a lower rim. The First Team WallMonster Arena ($3,438) pairs approximately 72 in. x 42 in. 1/2 in. tempered glass with a crank cylinder that adjusts from 10' down to 7 1/2' on four springs, with an optional 48 in. or 36 in. offset. The Jaypro WMWH shooting station ($3,061) has a 42 in. x 72 in. tempered glass backboard, an 8 ft. to 10 ft. manual height adjuster and the HAHC hand crank included. The Douglas W-36 MAX ($2,499) lists 3/8 in. tempered glass, 7'6" to 10' adjustment, a 3' wall extension and pre-installed padding.

Portable competition goals for the main court

When the main court doubles as an auditorium, a portable goal avoids any overhead structure. The Jaypro Elite 6600 PBEL66 ($16,063-$18,231 by pad color) carries 42 in. x 72 in. glass on a 5'-6" extension, adjusts from 8' to 10' in 6 in. increments, and rides on 800 lbs of ballast with 2 in. MBBP-6 pads and 8 in. non-marking wheels. The Elite 9600 PBEL96 ($17,263-$19,594) stretches the extension to 96 in. and the ballast to 1000 lbs.

First Team's Storm Arena ($9,329) has approximately 72 in. x 42 in. 1/2 in. tempered glass, a 54 in. to 66 in. extension, six 3 1/2 in. coil springs, 720 lbs ballast, approximately 1290 lbs system weight and a Lifetime Superior Warranty. The Tempest Triumph ($10,839) moves to a 96 in. extension with the FT235 1/2 in. tempered glass board (approximately 72 in. x 42 in.) and approximately 2000# system weight. At the top of the range, the Gared Pro Arena 9718S ($30,500) is a spring-assisted unit with a 10' 8" boom attached directly to the breakaway rim and a vinyl-padded base, intended for collegiate and professional play per the card.

Height adjusters and conversion backboards

If you already own a ceiling-hung or wall-mounted structure, two upgrades extend its life. First Team's FT300 ($1,694, 20 in. x 35 in. mounting) and FT310 ($2,165, 36 in. x 62 in. mounting) height adjusters move the goal infinitely between 10' and 8' via an acme screw and grade 8 nut, and carry a 10-Year Superior Warranty. The Jaypro GCBB-35 conversion backboard ($1,426) is 42 in. x 72 in. 1/2 in. tempered glass with 20 in. x 35 in. mounting and meets all NCAA and high school specifications per the card, which makes it a straightforward swap for an older fan or steel board.

Planning your space

Start with the ceiling. The Gared 2207 is sized for 18' to 24' ceilings, and its folded structure still has to live somewhere, so account for the 63 in. rectangular or 35 in. fan backboard drop when you check for lights, ducts and divider curtains. The 1194 hoist offers 55' of total travel and the Safstop belt tops out at 35 ft, so confirm both reach from the attachment point to the folded and playing positions.

For a wall mounted basketball hoop, the extension sets how far the backboard sits off the wall and therefore how much run-out space players get behind the baseline. A 2-3 ft. stationary unit keeps the board tight to the wall for a shooting station; a 4-6 ft. Gared package or 48-144 in. FoldaMount pushes the board out over the court; the Jaypro N1012GB at 10 ft. to 12 ft. is for gyms where the wall is well behind the end line. The required run-out distance behind the backboard varies by league, so check the rulebook before fixing the extension.

Jaypro's stationary mounts also need enough wall above the rim for the chain to meet its 45 degree minimum angle: 16'-5" of wall height at 4' FOB for the N24GB and 19'-5" at 10' FOB or 21'-5" at 12' FOB for the N1012GB, on brick, concrete or other solid or semi-solid masonry. For portables, plan a storage route and door width for a unit weighing approximately 1290 lbs (Storm Arena) to approximately 2000# (Tempest Triumph), and remember that 800 lbs to 1000 lbs of ballast rides on the base of the Jaypro Elite units.

How to measure / lay out

  • Measure finished floor to the lowest roof structure at the goal location and confirm it falls within 18' to 24' before specifying a 2207 variant.
  • Mark the rim location at 10' above finished floor (the standard height on the Gared P2350 and Jaypro N2FB cards) and note the lowest adjustable height your program needs: 8', 7'6" or 7 1/2' depending on the unit.
  • Measure from the wall face to the planned backboard face and match it to an extension range (2-3 ft., 4-6 ft., 48-72 in., 72-96 in., 96-144 in. or 10-12 ft.).
  • Verify the wall material is brick, concrete or other solid or semi-solid masonry for Jaypro stationary mounts, and measure wall height against the stated 16'-5", 19'-5" or 21'-5" requirements.
  • Confirm the superstructure O.D. (3 1/2 in. or 4 in.) before ordering a Safstop, and confirm 110/115/120 VAC single-phase power at the hoist location.
  • Check court markings, run-out and sideline clearances against your governing rulebook, since these vary by league.

First Team vs Gared vs Jaypro at a glance

Gared is the only brand with an active ceiling-hung structure, drive and safety lock on our cards, and its wall packages bundle the AFRG42 glass, 2000+ breakaway rim and PMCE padding. First Team leads on warranty language (Lifetime Superior on the FoldaMount82 Triumph backboard and the Storm Arena, 10-Year Superior on the FT300 and FT310 adjusters) and offers the widest fold-up extension spread, 48 in. to 144 in. Jaypro covers the most price points for stationary wall mounts, from the $2,086 N2FB fan board to the $5,015 N1012GB, and its Elite portables add the only 6 in. increment height adjustment in the lineup. Douglas's W-36 MAX is the lowest-priced adjustable wall mount at $2,499.

Sources. Specifications and prices come from the 2026 JoySport Store product cards for First Team, Gared, Jaypro and Douglas. Backboard compliance claims on the FoldaMount82 Triumph and Jaypro GCBB-35 cards reference NCAA and National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) standards, and the Gared Pro Arena 9718S card references collegiate and professional play, which points to NCAA and NBA rulebooks. Court layout, run-out and padding rules vary by league, so confirm them in the governing body's current rulebook.
