A basketball hoop system is chosen by three things: where it is anchored, how the height adjusts, and the backboard material. In-ground systems are set in concrete and are the most rigid; portable systems roll on a weighted base and need no excavation; wall-mount and ceiling systems save floor space in gyms and garages. Tempered glass gives true rebound for competition, acrylic is the value option for driveways, and steel or fiberglass suits parks and schools.
The rim is 10 ft (3.05 m) above the floor and 18 in (45.7 cm) in inside diameter for NBA, WNBA, NCAA, FIBA and high-school play. A regulation backboard is 72 in wide by 42 in tall; 60 in and 54 in boards are common for residential driveways. Youth play typically starts at 8 ft.

How much concrete does an in-ground hoop need? Most residential systems call for a footing roughly 24 in wide by 48 in deep; institutional goosenecks are larger and the anchor kit specifies the exact hole. Check the installation manual on each product page.
Are portable hoops stable enough for adult play? Yes when the base is filled to spec — look for bases of 400 lb or more and a 54 in or wider backboard.
