The number says nothing about the size of the mesh openings, the dimensions of the net or the material it is made from. It only tells you how much cord is in each strand.

Weight climbs with twine size. A #42 nylon net weighs roughly twice as much as a #21 net of the same dimensions. That extra weight is what buys you durability, but it also loads the frame and cables harder and makes seasonal takedown a two-person job.

When in doubt, buy one size heavier than the level you play at today. A program that starts with a #21 net and grows into daily practice will be shopping for a replacement long before a #36 net would have worn out. The twine number is the one specification you cannot upgrade later without buying a new net.
Mesh size is the opening between cords, measured across one square. For batting cages the standard is 1 3/4 in square, which stops both baseballs and softballs. A 1 7/8 in mesh is also common and serves the same purpose. Either size will hold a ball in the cage, so you do not need a different net for a softball team and a baseball team sharing one tunnel.
Mesh size and twine size are independent. A #21 net and a #42 net can both have 1 3/4 in mesh; the difference is the cord, not the opening. When you compare two nets, check both figures rather than assuming a heavier twine also means a tighter mesh.
Batting cage nets are made from one of two materials: nylon or polyethylene, usually shortened to poly or HDPE. The right choice depends more on where the cage lives than on how hard the hitters swing.
Nylon is the strongest material per thickness and has the best impact absorption, so a ball hitting a nylon net loses its energy in the cord rather than bouncing back into the cage. Two drawbacks matter. Nylon absorbs water, so a wet net gets heavier and stays wet, and it should be treated for UV protection if it will spend time in the sun. Untreated nylon left outdoors and stored wet is the shortest-lived combination you can buy.
Poly resists water and UV on its own, weighs less than nylon and costs less. Its weakness is strength per thickness: a poly cord is not as strong as a nylon cord of the same twine number. Manufacturers compensate by using a heavier twine number in poly to reach the same strength, which is why you will see poly cages specified at a higher # than the nylon equivalent for the same level of play. Compare nets by duty rating and material together, not by the # alone.

The practical rule: indoor and covered cages favor nylon, outdoor cages favor poly. If you want nylon outdoors, insist on UV treatment and plan to take the net down when the season ends.
Knotted netting is the standard for batting cages. Each intersection of cord is tied rather than fused, which lets the mesh flex under impact and keeps a single broken strand from running into a large hole. Look for knotted construction on any net that will be hit in regularly.
The rope border is the perimeter cord the net is tied or clipped to. On batting cage nets it is commonly 5/16 in to 3/8 in in diameter. The border carries the weight of the whole net and takes the strain at every attachment point, so a thicker border on a heavy #42 or #60 net is worth having. Inspect it first when you check a used net, because that is where wear shows up before the mesh itself fails.

The 55 ft net suits softball and youth baseball because both the 43 ft fastpitch distance and the 46 ft Little League distance fit inside it with room to spare. Baseball at 60 ft 6 in needs the 70 ft net. The 80 ft length shows up in larger facilities that want more room behind the batter, space for a pitching machine and screen, or a cage that doubles for fielding drills.
A batting cage net needs a frame or an overhead cable system. Freestanding cage frames are commonly built from 1 5/8 in or 2 in galvanized steel tubing. Galvanizing matters outdoors, where bare steel will rust at every joint. The net is either hung on cables that run the length of the frame, which lets the net slide open and closed, or tied directly to the frame rails through the rope border.
Match the frame to the net weight. A #42 or #60 nylon net, especially a wet one, is a significant load. The 2 in tubing is the safer choice for heavy nets and for outdoor cages that also take wind. Indoor facilities that hang nets from ceiling cables should confirm the ceiling structure can carry the net weight plus the shock of a ball strike before ordering.
The net is only useful if it fits the space, so lay the cage out on paper before buying. Start from pitching distance, because that decides the minimum useful length.

Width. Standard nets are 12 ft or 14 ft wide. A 14 ft cage gives right-handed and left-handed hitters room to set up without moving the plate and leaves space for a coach with a bucket. Multiple cages side by side need walking room between them; that spacing varies by facility, so plan it rather than assuming nets can touch.
Height. Standard nets are 12 ft tall. Indoors, the ceiling must clear the top of the net plus the cables or hangers that support it, and lights, ductwork and sprinkler heads must sit outside the cage footprint. Outdoors, the frame stands taller than the net; check the frame specification for its own height.
Outdoors, also think about drainage and sun. A net that sits in a puddle or is left bunched up wet will fail early, and a poly net or UV-treated nylon net will last longer on a sunny site than untreated nylon.
A typical outdoor poly net lasts several seasons; an indoor nylon net lasts longer. The two main causes of failure are UV exposure and storing the net wet. Neither is about how hard the ball is hit, which is why a light-duty net indoors can outlive a heavy-duty net left outside year-round.
Simple habits extend net life. Take outdoor nets down, or at least drop them off the cables, when the season ends. Dry a net fully before it goes into a bag or bin. Check the rope border and the attachment points at the start of each season, since that is where a net wears first. Patch small holes as they appear rather than letting a strand run.
Backyard cage for a youth player: a #21 or #36 poly net in the 55 ft size, with 1 3/4 in mesh. Poly handles the weather, and light twine keeps the net manageable for one adult to take down.
