Notice that the goal is the one constant once players reach the 11v11, full-field stage: 8 feet high by 24 feet wide (8 yards) at the FIFA, NFHS, and NCAA level.

A common question when a facility hosts both sports: how does a soccer field size compare to a football field? An American football field is 120 yd long overall (100 yd of play plus two 10 yd end zones) and 53 1/3 yd (160 ft) wide. A FIFA international soccer field can be up to 20 yd wider than a football field, which is why many combination fields feel noticeably wider for soccer matches even when the end lines are close to the football hash marks.

Before committing to a layout, work backward from the largest format you'll ever need to host. If your program grows from 7v7 into 9v9 and eventually 11v11, plan the site around the 11v11 FIFA range (100-130 yd x 50-100 yd) even if you paint smaller youth lines inside it in the early years. For a dedicated youth-only complex, sizing to the 9v9 range (70-80 yd x 45-55 yd) or the 7v7 range (55-65 yd x 35-45 yd) can save significant real estate if older age groups will play elsewhere.
Also account for the penalty area and goal area when siting goals near a boundary fence or another field: the penalty area alone extends 18 yd into the field and 18 yd along the goal line from each post, so goals need to sit well clear of adjacent surfaces, walkways, or a second field's sideline. On combination football/soccer sites, remember a full-width FIFA international field (up to 80 yd) can require up to 20 yd more width than a 160-ft-wide football field, so check sideline clearance before painting permanent soccer lines on a football surface.
